500 Students Participate in the Annual Physics Fairs

Thanks to your support the Mounds View Schools Education Foundation once again sponsored the Mounds View and Irondale High Schools Physics Fairs held in March.
More than 500 students participated in the Physics Fairs with thousands of parents and neighbors attending. The Physics Fairs highlight the results of students' long-term group projects in which components are assembled into a chain reaction sequence, and principles of physics and engineering are put into practice.
In addition, Irondale High School hosted a STEM career fair, which included representatives from a number of local organizations, including Boston Scientific, Medtronic and Cummins.
The Foundation has supported this initiative since 1999. To help support the Mounds View Schools Physics Fairs and other initiatives like it, click here.

Partnering for Education Lunch a Huge Success!

More than 160 local business leaders, friends and neighbors attended the inaugural Partnering for Education Lunch on February 9 at the North Oaks Country Club.

The event featured Dr. Robert Veninga, professor emeritus at the University of Minnesota's School of Public Health, who presented
Resilience: What it is and why it matters!

Dr. Veninga discussed what makes children, teenagers and young employees resilient. He offered the following suggestions for what we can do at home, school or place of employment:

If you are a parent, have one meal a day with your child;
If you are an educator, help every child discover their uniqueness;
If you are a neighbor to young people, attend their games, music or drama events;
If you are a business person, let every young adult know the talents they do not see.

A summary of Dr. Veninga's presentation is available by clicking here.

Dan Hoverman, Superintendent of Mounds View Public Schools, presented a few important new initiatives that are preparing all students for possibilities beyond K-12, including some of those funded by the Foundation:

ACT Choice Initiative
Technology Vision Initiative

This event was free thanks to generous contributions from our local business community.

    Juniors at Irondale and Mounds View High Schools Take the ACT Test

    In April, Mounds View Public Schools became the first and only district in Minnesota to provide the ACT and writing exam, free of charge, to all district juniors thanks to a grant from the Mounds View Schools Education Foundation.

    Financial Literacy course piloted at Area Learning Center
    Understanding and managing money can be a daunting task for young adults in today's world. Budgeting, credit cards, loans, debt, saving and investing, inflation, taxes - the list goes on. Thanks to a donation from Country Financial, MVSEF has funded the development of a high-school level Financial Literacy course. This hybrid course, which is being piloted at the Area Learning Center, helps students to understand fundamental principles of personal finance. Students are also given the opportunity to explore how education, skills, and career choices may affect their future income and goals, and to practice personal money management skills.

    The objectives for the course were designed to align with the U.S. Department of Treasury's criteria for effective financial literacy education programs, and with Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy's national standards. RoAnne Elliot, Director of Curriculum and Instruction for Mounds View Schools, hopes to further develop this course and make it available to all district high-school students.
