500 Students Participate in the Annual Physics Fairs
More than 500 students participated in the Physics Fairs with thousands of parents and neighbors attending. The Physics Fairs highlight the results of students' long-term group projects in which components are assembled into a chain reaction sequence, and principles of physics and engineering are put into practice.
In addition, Irondale High School hosted a STEM career fair, which included representatives from a number of local organizations, including Boston Scientific, Medtronic and Cummins.
The Foundation has supported this initiative since 1999. To help support the Mounds View Schools Physics Fairs and other initiatives like it, click here.

Financial Literacy course piloted at Area Learning Center
Understanding and managing money can be a daunting task for young adults in today's world. Budgeting, credit cards, loans, debt, saving and investing, inflation, taxes - the list goes on. Thanks to a donation from Country Financial, MVSEF has funded the development of a high-school level Financial Literacy course. This hybrid course, which is being piloted at the Area Learning Center, helps students to understand fundamental principles of personal finance. Students are also given the opportunity to explore how education, skills, and career choices may affect their future income and goals, and to practice personal money management skills.
The objectives for the course were designed to align with the U.S. Department of Treasury's criteria for effective financial literacy education programs, and with Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy's national standards. RoAnne Elliot, Director of Curriculum and Instruction for Mounds View Schools, hopes to further develop this course and make it available to all district high-school students.
